Charlotte nonprofit has new name but same affordable housing mission

CHARLOTTE — A nonprofit is helping families in need expedite the hunt for affordable housing in the Charlotte area.

Housing Collaborative -- formerly known as Socialserve -- helps people experiencing homelessness, domestic violence or any other issues that make finding housing a challenge.

Jasmine Milton and her colleagues help connect folks with potential landlords, sift through the paperwork and even cover some of the financial cost.

“The Charlotte housing market is hot, the prices are rising faster than incomes, the inventory is low,” said Tara Peel, CEO of the Housing Collaborative. “All the things you’re hearing sort of disproportionately impact people in the lower income level. It’s hard to develop housing fast enough to meet that need.”

The nonprofit helped nearly 11,000 families stay in their home last year and placed another 300 families in new homes.
