Cherryville man honored for saving 2 from fallen tree

CHERRYVILLE, N.C. — A man from Cherryville is being honored for risking his life to try and save a mother and daughter during devastating storms in May.

Thursday night, the Gaston County Board of Commissioners issued a formal commendation to recognize Jason Day for his heroic actions.

“We’re used to police officers, fire departments, and [emergency medical services] going into danger, but not every day someone like Jason Day does what he did to save someone’s lie and put his own life in danger,” the commissioners said.

Channel 9′s Ken Lemon spoke with Day after the strong storm in May. He told us the tree fell on a mother’s car right next to him, and when he rushed to help, the wind swept him 40 feet into the air.

Day was knocked unconscious and had to get 12 staples in his head.

The mother told Lemon she was grateful that Day did everything he could to try and help.
