Hillary Clinton rallies supporters in Charlotte ahead of NC primary

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Hillary Clinton addressed supporters Monday evening at the Grady Cole Center in Charlotte.

She spoke for about 30 minutes and then spent about 20 minutes greeting supporters. The crowd of over 1,100 people erupted when she took the stage.

Clinton got right into the issues she's echoed throughout her campaign.

She spent a lot of time speaking about the economy, bringing and keeping good jobs in the country including advanced manufacturing positions.

Clinton said we must train young people for these jobs, invest in public education, raise the minimum wage and ensure pay equity.

The crowd cheered when she said the U.S. economy does better with a Democrat in the White House.

Clinton began her speech saying Charlotte holds a special place in her heart, as it's the name of her grandchild.

She said she wants to ensure her grandchild and every other child is able to live in a country that allows them to realize their full potential.

Clinton's Charlotte campaign office also saw heavy use Sunday, with supporters gathered around the table, making hundreds of phone calls reminding voters of the rally Monday, and petitioning for their vote Tuesday.

"Yesterday, I was here for four hours, and I made probably 300 phone calls," said volunteer Louann Neville. "She's not a perfect candidate for everyone, for me she is."

Organizers said they're expecting about 1,500 supporters at the event. Clinton is on her way to Charlotte from Chicago, where she spoke earlier Monday. Illinois also has a primary Tuesday.

A recent poll from High Point University shows Clinton with a solid lead over Bernie Sanders in North Carolina, leading 58 percent to Sanders' 34 percent.

One volunteer for the campaign said Clinton has built strong relationships with Democratic leaders in North Carolina and she's been visible in the state over the years.

"I see Hillary as a fighter, she's resilient and she's a change maker," volunteer Autumn Alston said. "I think that she's being honest with the American people she sometimes tells them things she may not want to hear but she's doing it because she's there."
