As heat, humidity arrive in Charlotte, so will Clover mites

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Clover mites, which are nearly impossible to see, are starting to invade Charlotte. Experts say mites and chiggers could be a big issue over the next couple of weeks.

“It's starting to get hot, and I'm a little nervous about the 90 degrees and 90 percent humidity for 90 days," Jennifer Fuller said.

Matt Freeburn, vice president of Killingsworth Environmental, said, "It's definitely the season for clover mites. Late spring, you'll start to see them around pools, on the sidewalks, patios and front porches."

With several inches of rain recently in Charlotte, clover mites are hatching from below the ground. The young mites are attracted to sunlight and warmth, particularly on sidewalks or along the interiors of windows.

Clover mites won't bite and are considered more of a nuisance. These mites are often confused with chiggers, which will bite and can’t be seen with the naked eye.

"Clover mites are definitely nothing to be worried about. They aren't going to hurt you or cause any damage. They're just a pest," Freeburn said.

If you see clover mites in your home, don't squish them as they will leave a red stain. The best thing to do is vacuum them. You can also keep them from coming inside by spraying your lawn.

While there are dozens of clover mites coming out now, they will only last a few more weeks until the extreme heat and humidity arrives.
