CHARLOTTE — Charlotte Douglas International Airport paused Friday morning to remember those killed on Sept. 11th.
CLT airport leaders gathered to honor those lives lost twenty-five years ago.
The honor guard moved through the departures level for a procession. For an area that is usually filled with rolling bags and boarding calls, the crowd stood silent. And CLT Chief Exec Officer Haley Gent opened with a tribute.
“We honor and remember those whose lives were tragically cut short and pay tribute to the brave first responders who answered the call to serve,” Gentry said.
The impact at CLT was immediate when flights across the country were grounded. Leaving thousands of passengers stranded.
“There was a sense of urgency, fear, and disbelief that permeated the campus,” Gentry said.
The attacks forever changed air travel and led to the creation of TSA. Speakers said the responsibility to remember, and remain vigilant, must now be passed to the next generation.
“I think it’s important that we continue the fight,” Asst. Federal Security Director Jose Bonilla said, “We pass the baton to all of you, we may not be here, but don’t ever let it die; don’t ever let it burn; don’t let that fire burn.”
Friday’s message connected remembrance with TSA’s continued commitment to keeping travelers safe.
