CLT soars high among nation's most-connected airports

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Charlotte Douglas International Airport has for another year secured its position as one of the nation’s most-connected airports.

So says aviation data provider OAG in its new “Megahubs United States Index” that came out this week and ranks the nation’s top 25 airports in terms of connectivity.

OAG placed Charlotte Douglas as the third most-connected airport in the U.S., following just Chicago O’Hare International Airport (No. 1) and Hartsfield–Jackson Atlanta International Airport (No. 2). Those three airports retained their same spots as last year.

The index, focused on domestic connectivity, aims to look beyond just the size of an airport’s route network by taking into account the number of possible connections available at each airport in a three-hour window as well as the attractiveness of each airport as a connecting point for domestic passengers.

Charlotte Douglas’ connectivity score of 236 was well behind ORD’s 479 and ATL’s 396 marks. Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport trailed CLT at No. 4, with a score of 228.
