Suspect identified after deadly shooting near Spectrum Center

CHARLOTTE — The Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department says one person is dead following a shooting in Uptown Sunday.

The suspect in this case has been identified. 49-year-old Sean Dell has been charged with first-degree murder.

Police say the victim was shot on the sidewalk near the Spectrum Center.

“They just want to walk around and come visit,” said Trevion Brewer, a resident. “They are not going to want to do that when they hear about people coming to die on the sidewalk.”

Officers say the shooting took place around noon during one of the busiest Sundays of the year due to the Carolina Panthers’ first home game.

Police responded to the 300 block of East Trade Street. MEDIC transported the victim to a nearby hospital, where they were later pronounced deceased.

According to police, Dell didn’t get far. He was arrested close to the scene.

They have not said what was the motive behind the murder or how long the men knew each other.

“The sidewalk is surprising in a city with this many people,” said Taylor Fleman who lives in the area. “It’s not surprising that these crimes happen, but it is happening in broad daylight on a sidewalk on a busy street with the bus center and cops and stuff. That is a little surprising.”

The victim has not been identified.

Dell was convicted of a felony domestic violence charge in Washington state.

He’s currently in jail under no bond.
