14-year-old charged with murder of teen in north Charlotte, police say

CHARLOTTE — A 14-year-old has been charged with shooting and killing a 17-year-old in north Charlotte Tuesday morning, police said.

Officers responded at around 11:35 a.m. to Franklin Avenue near Lucena Street, where they found William Avery III had been shot several times.

Charlotte-Mecklenburg police said Avery was taken to a local hospital with life-threatening injuries but later died.

On Thursday, authorities arrested a 14-year-old and charged him with first-degree murder. He was taken to a juvenile correctional facility in Cabarrus County.

A Channel 9 crew at the scene at the time of the shooting said there was crime scene tape and several police cars.

No other details have been released at this point.
