CMPD: 2 juveniles, 18-year-old arrested for shooting at Charlotte elementary school

CHARLOTTE — Two minors and an 18-year-old have been arrested for shooting a teen outside a northwest Charlotte elementary school Monday morning, according to Charlotte-Mecklenburg police.

On Friday, police said they found evidence indicating a shooting had happened in the area of the athletic field that day. They identified all three people involved and arrested them. Officers said two of the suspects were under the age of 18. They were both hurt but are expected to be OK, and will be charged after they are treated for their injuries, authorities said.

The third suspect, 18-year-old Malachi Huggins, was arrested Monday afternoon in connection with the shooting. Huggins is facing several charges including assault with a deadly weapon, robbery with a dangerous weapon, and conspiracy for robbery with a dangerous weapon.

Channel 9′s DaShawn Brown arrived at Oakdale Elementary School at about 11:30 a.m. Monday and saw several police cars in the parking lot, along with crime scene tape. Officers told Brown they were investigating a shooting that happened on the school’s campus.

Police sources told Channel 9 the two teens were fighting over a gun.

Paramedics also confirmed to Channel 9 that one person was hurt in a shooting on Ravendale Drive at the same time, which is less than half a mile away from the school. They were taken to the hospital but are expected to be OK, paramedics said.

According to the police report, Huggins shot a 16-year-old.

Police said the people involved in the shooting were not Oakdale Elementary students, and the suspects knew each other. The shooting was not a random act, authorities said.

A resident in the Ravendale Drive area told Channel 9 one of the people shot is his friend. The neighbor said his friend is a teenager who was shot in his hand.

Channel 9 has asked officers if the two scenes are connected, but has not yet heard back.

Monday was a teacher workday for Oakdale Elementary, so no students were in class at the time of the shooting. Several staff members were working, one of whom told Channel 9 they couldn’t hear anything that was going on outside. They just wanted to know they were safe.

Across the street from the school, there’s also a daycare with at least 100 children and staff. The daycare’s director said none of them were notified, and that’s one thing she hopes will change.
