Hold up at Ballantyne Wells Fargo Charlotte's second bank robbery of day

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Charlotte-Mecklenburg police are investigating the city's second bank robbery in a matter of hours.

The robbery happened around 2:30 p.m. at the Wells Fargo along Conlan Circle in Ballantyne.

From Chopper 9 SkyZoom, several CMPD vehicles could be seen around the bank and dozens of officers were surveying the scene.

Police told Channel 9 the suspect walked in and told tellers that he was armed with a gun.

Officials said he fled the scene after receiving money.

Police said they went door to door and canvassed a number of businesses to see if their security systems caught a glimpse of the suspect.

No arrests have been made.

The robber is white and about 6 feet tall. He was last seen wearing a black jacket and blue jeans.

CMPD said at this time, detectives do not believe the suspect is connected to the robbery earlier Monday morning at the State Employees Credit Union on University City Boulevard.

Residents said the situation and knowing the suspect could still be on the loose makes them worried.

"Makes me a little nervous, I've got young kids and having something like that happen kind of in your backyard is scary," resident Cory Hicks said. "Generally thinking, it's kind of quiet around here isn't it? That's what you think, you think it's a pretty safe area and a good place to raise kids and something like this happens and it kind of scares you a little bit."

Zachary Hair said he works a short distance away from the bank and said the police got his attention when they surrounded a car in the parking lot, thinking it belonged to the suspect. Officials said it didn't, but Hair said it caused a lot of chaos.

"I hope that if they are robbing banks, they don't start robbing small stores after that," Hair said. "There was maybe 15 or so with quite a few officers surrounding that black Honda over there."
