Shots fired into apartments strike woman, narrowly miss neighbor and son eating dinner

CHARLOTTE — Police are looking for whoever fired a gun into an apartment building striking a 55-year-old woman in north Charlotte Tuesday night.

A Channel 9 crew saw a large police presence at the apartment, which is on University Station Circle near the intersection of Davis Lake Parkway and W.T. Harris Boulevard.

The woman was taken to the hospital and are expected to be OK, police said.

A resident, who did not want to be identified, said the rounds first went into his neighbor’s apartment before piercing his wall.

The man said the rounds came within a couple feet of him and his six-year-old son, who were at the dinner table.

“The first one, I didn’t recollect what was going on,” the father said. “The second one, is when I realized, ‘Oh my God, these are bullets coming through my walls.’ So, I grabbed him to get him down out of the chair.”

The man said they went to the back of the apartment where his four other children were until police arrived.

“I didn’t know if people were shooting at me, or what,” he told Channel 9. “I didn’t know what was going on, honestly. You can’t see bullets.”

He had a message for the gunman the day after the shooting.

“The things you do not only affect you. They affect people close to you, people around you,” the man said. “It just affects everybody.”

Police did not say what led up to the shooting in the gated community, but Channel 9 has asked for more information.

According to the police report, 15 people were inside two apartments that were shot into.

They ranged from ages 61 to 6 years old. In addition to the woman who was shot, the other people listed were 39, 13, 15, 11, 29, 23, 33, 15, 12, and 7 years old.
