Authorities said that around 1:40 a.m., Michael Brown drove himself to the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department’s Steele Creek Division office and told an officer that he had just killed his girlfriend in an apartment on Point South Drive, off Carowinds Boulevard and South Tryon Street.

When officers got to the apartment they found a woman who had been shot to death inside. She was identified as 27-year-old Whitney Jo King.

They also found an infant who was not hurt. That baby boy has been placed in the temporary custody of the Department of Social Services.

“At a minimum, a child has lost their mother tonight, so that's just heartbreaking,” said CMPD Maj. Mike Smathers.

Investigators interviewed Brown, 31, and charged him with King's murder.

King’s family is in disbelief.

"She's in a better place,” King’s cousin, Mallory Kimbrell, said. “She's in heaven and she'll be looking down on us."

Those close to her called her the sweetest person.

"You could see it through her eyes,” King’s manager, Jennifer Abernathy, said. “She was just a wonderful a beautiful hearted person."

“I heard some people arguing and it was really loud, and that is what woke me up,” said neighbor Wayne Manigault. “Then I hear a car leaving really quick -- must have been around 1:30 or something.”

Channel 9 watched as detectives inspected his silver sedan in the parking lot of the Steele Creek Division's office.

King's death marks Charlotte's 19th homicide of the year. The investigation is active and ongoing.
