CHARLOTTE — The Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department has identified the man killed in an officer-involved shooting on LaSalle Street and is asking a judge for permission to release body-worn camera footage from the incident.
CMPD identified the man as 47-year-old Curtis Jermaine Massey. His family has been notified of his death.
The shooting happened Sept. 18 in the 1300 block of LaSalle Street. Officers were responding to a disturbance call when they encountered a group of people who appeared to be involved in a criminal transaction, according to CMPD.
Police said one person ran from officers. During a short foot pursuit, the person allegedly pulled out a firearm. An officer then fired, striking the suspect.
Officers provided medical aid before MEDIC took the suspect to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead. A firearm was recovered at the scene. No officers were injured.
The North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation is leading the investigation. CMPD’s Internal Affairs Bureau is also conducting a separate investigation, and the officer involved has been placed on paid administrative leave.
Chief Estella Patterson said she personally reviewed the body-worn camera footage and believes it provides critical context about what happened.
Under North Carolina law, body-worn camera footage cannot be released publicly without a court order. CMPD has now formally filed a petition seeking authorization to release the footage.
