CMPD: Suspect leads 100-mph chase into York County after hitting officer in Charlotte

CHARLOTTE — Just days after a suspect led a reckless chase through the city, the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department says a driver accused of striking a CMPD officer ended up leading a chase into South Carolina Friday afternoon.

CMPD said on Twitter that an officer with the Steele Creek division received “minor scrapes” after a suspect hit him with a car.

Officers said they were called for a vehicle stolen from a car shop at 100 Red Roof Drive around 2:30 p.m. Friday, near the intersection of Nations Ford Road and Archdale Drive. Police said the business was tracking a car taken from its lot.

Police said they found the car on Sharonbrook Drive, a road just off of Sharon Road West. As they approached the car, investigators said the suspect, 22-year-old Bryan Calderon, drove off, hitting an officer in the process. CMPD said when he hit the officer, Calderon allegedly knocked him to the ground, running over his legs.

Authorities began chasing Calderon and ended up in York County, they said. At times, they reached speeds of up to 100 mph. Nearly half an hour after it began, the chase ended when Highway Patrol took Calderon into custody.

Calderon was charged in South Carolina for hit-and-run and DWI, police said. He faces additional charges for possession of a stolen vehicle, assault with a deadly weapon on a law enforcement officer, hit-and-run, fleeing to elude and no operator’s license.

The officer who was hit had some scrapes and bruises but was otherwise OK, police said.

“Great work by our officers and [South Carolina Highway Patrol] to get Calderon in custody without anyone else getting hurt,” CMPD said on Twitter.

According to FlightAware, CMPD’s helicopter went to South Carolina and began circling an area on Saluda Road in Rock Hill before returning back to Charlotte. CMPD clarified that the suspect was taken into custody at this location.
