CHARLOTTE — The board member who made the motion to fire Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools now-former Superintendent Crystal Hill said it wasn’t an easy decision.
Dr. Charlitta Hatch told The Charlotte Observer even though the district’s investigation didn’t find any misconduct by Hill, it did identify area of weakness.
She said her decision was based on “employment judgement” and whether the relationship between the board and superintendent was “workable.”
Some board members voted to keep Hill in her role. They also pointed out the divide between members and said it needs to be improved so they can focus on serving students.
Many parents seem to share that sentiment. Channel 9’s Evan Donovan spoke with Sabrina Berry, a CMS parent, who wants to know how the district got to this place.
“The public deserves transparency, accountability and answers, not just a political maneuvering and the closed-door answers we’re seeing,” Berry said.
The school district is currently under a state investigation. State Auditor Dave Boliek confirmed he’s looking into what he calls “financial irregularities” in the district. While that confirmation came Wednesday, he says the investigation actually started three weeks before Hill released her 200-page memorandum with claims of misspending and cronyism.
Boliek said his office is working alongside the State Bureau of Investigation to examine those claims.
