CHARLOTTE — Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools is responding to a federal investigation into the district’s financial controversies.

The FBI and Department of Justice have opened their own investigation but have not specified what it is about.

CMS released a statement Wednesday afternoon saying: “Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools (CMS) is aware of an active investigation involving the U.S. Attorney’s Office and the Federal Bureau of Investigation. CMS will continue to cooperate with any requests from law enforcement.

“We remain focused on our core mission: serving students and supporting our schools, staff and families. That work continues each day across Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools.

“Because this is an active investigation, we cannot provide additional information, details or comment at this time.”

CMS is also under investigation by the State Bureau of Investigation and the North Carolina Office of the State Auditor.
