RETURN TO LEARNING: Thousands of NC students begin school year unlike any other

MECKLENBURG COUNTY, N.C. — Tens of thousands of local students are returning to learning Monday and it is a back to school day like we have never experienced before.

Some students will log on from home while others will get to return to buildings they haven’t seen since March.

Here’s a look at the dozen districts in the Charlotte area under “Plan B,” which means they will start the school year under a mix of virtual and in-person learning. Many will only be sending small groups of students to school each day to start.

At first, CMS was planning to have a mix of in-person learning and virtual learning. But in late July, the district switched to an all-virtual plan, saying it was not safe for children to go back to class yet due to COVID-19.

It’s been challenging for families to prepare for this school year.

On Sunday, CMS Superintendent Earnest Winston shared a message on social media to encourage parents and students.

“We might be starting the year remotely, but that doesn’t mean there are not opportunities to engage in learning. Take your online learning seriously. Give it your all. Do your best,” Winston said.

The district has done a lot to help families get ready for virtual learning. They shared tutorials online and have passed out tens of thousands of computers.
