CHARLOTTE — The National Alliance Against Violence gathered for an event on the steps of the district attorney’s office Sunday afternoon.
Although the office was closed, people who came out believe Mecklenburg County District Attorney Spencer Merriweather will get the message all the same.
Many of the participants have lost loved ones due to murder.
Their pictures were displayed and empty shoes were left on the steps to symbolize their loss.
Clydia Davis, who lost her son Donquavious, organized the event.
“This is where justice begins and at this point, it’s more of what we are fighting for,” she said. “Justice that goes beyond the district attorney’s office. It goes into legislation because they are the ones who make the rules for the district attorneys to go by.”
Davis fought for changes that prevented murder suspects from getting bond, and some of the changes she pushed for are in Iryna’s Law.
