Community-wide effort launches to address Charlotte housing, homelessness crisis

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — There’s a major new push to address the housing and homelessness crisis in Charlotte.

On Thursday, a group made up of nearly 50 city, county, nonprofit and corporate leaders announced that it is creating a strategic plan around housing instability and homelessness.

By Oct. 1 the group, led by Atrium Health, Bank of America, the City of Charlotte, Mecklenburg County and Charlotte Center City Partners, aims to develop and launch a five-year plan to address current and prevent future homelessness.

“We have a little over 3,000 people that are homeless based on our last count, but if you look at the people who are unstably housed, the numbers are huge,” Mecklenburg County manager Dena Diorio said.
