Coronavirus local updates: SC officials report 237 new positive COVID-19 cases, 8 additional deaths

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — More than 2.8 million people worldwide -- including nearly 939,000 people in the United States – have been infected with the new coronavirus, and the number of deaths from the outbreak continues to rise. Officials are attempting to contain the COVID-19 outbreak in the U.S. as hospitals manage unprecedented patient surges.

  • The number of cases across North Carolina reached 8,830 Sunday. North Carolina is now reporting 299 deaths, 107,894 completed tests and 451 people currently in the hospital.

4:00 p.m.

Although the Wells Fargo golf tournament that was supposed to be held this week was canceled due to COVID-19, the company continues to donate to local organizations.

3:56 p.m.

Brooks’ Sandwich House in NoDa announced it will be reopening on May 4, a month after it shut down due to COVID-19.

In an Instagram post, the shop said it will reopen, but with some changes. It said it will install a microphone to place orders, similar to a drive-thru.

3:46 p.m.

The South Carolina Department of Health and Environmental Control announced 237 new cases of COVID-19, and 8 additional deaths.

This brings the total number of confirmed cases in South Carolina to 5,490 and those who have died to 174.

Officials said those who died were six elderly from Clarendon (2), Darlington (1), Greenville (2), and Richland (1) counties, and two middle-aged people from Colleton (1) and Greenville (1) counties.

1:00 p.m.

Health officials say there are 334 confirmed coronavirus cases and 20 deaths in Rowan County.

According to the health department, Rowan County has had 1,834 negative tests results.

11:15 a.m.

North Carolina has released its latest data on COVID-19 in the state

There were 288 more coronavirus cases confirmed in North Carolina by the state’s Department of Health and Human Services.

The new figures showed an additional 10 deaths to bring the total to 299.

There have now been 8,830 cases in the state across 94 counties.

Numbers:

There are now 8,830 positive cases reported across North Carolina, which is 571 more than the day prior.

Ten more deaths were reported overnight, bringing the total for the state to 299.

There have been 107,894 completed tests and 451 people are currently in the hospital for COVID-19.

Case breakdown by age:

0-17 (2%)

18-24 (7%)

25-49 (40%)

50-64 (27%)

65 or older (24%)

COVID-19 deaths by age:

25-49 (4%)

50-64 (11%)

65 or older (85%)

Of those positive cases, 53% are white and 39% are black.

Men make up 51% of the positive cases, and women account for 47%. Men make up 60% of the deaths.

Outbreaks:

There have been 46 reported outbreaks at nursing homes (Burke (2), Cabarrus, Cleveland, Iredell, Mecklenburg (5), Rowan (3), Union (2)). Those nursing homes have seen 1,340 positive cases and 122 deaths.

There have been 19 reported outbreaks at residential care facilities (Cabarrus (2), Mecklenburg (5), Stanly, Union). Those facilities have seen 248 positive cases and 25 deaths.

10:15 a.m.

North Carolina health officials say test results provided electronically on Saturday to the state health department by Vidant Health incorrectly reported test results as all being positive.

The numbers were included in Saturday’s total case count, which brought the state’s total to 8,623.

Health officials said Vidant Health has worked with the NCDHHS to fix the problem and update the data. The state’s total case count is now 8,542.

8:00 a.m.

South Carolina Governor Henry McMaster is expected to issue a new State of Emergency Monday.

It will keep his “Home or Work” Order in effect until he rescinds it.

The order was part of a State of Emergency that was set to expire Monday, but this will keep it in place until the governor lifts it.

On Tuesday, McMaster lifted restrictions on thousands of businesses in the state and let them reopen. This included some non-essential businesses like clothing, shoe, jewelry and department stores.

These stores must limit customers inside to 20 percent the buildings maximum capacity.

4:12 p.m. (Saturday)

A long-term care facility is Rowan County confirmed two staff members have tested positive for the coronavirus.

Liberty Commons Nursing and Rehabilitation Center said the employees were sent home immediately. According to the facility, all residents are being tested for the virus, as well.

4:00 p.m. (Saturday)

Mecklenburg County health officials are now reporting 1,455 positive cases of COVID-19 and 40 deaths due to the virus.
