Couple arrested for making fake prescriptions, authorities say

ROWAN CO., N.C. — A Salisbury couple was arrested Thursday on drug-related charges on Interstate 85 North in Rowan County, the Rowan County Sheriff's Office said.

The Sheriff's Office arrested Delbert Roys, 46, and Christie Roys, 47, on I-85 after a traffic stop by the North Carolina State Highway Patrol.

Several different law enforcement agencies had already been investigating the couple. Officials said the investigation found that at least since August 2014, the Royses created fake prescriptions for Oxycodone, hydrocodone, Alprazolam, also known as Xanax, and Estradiol. They signed the prescriptions with doctor's names from Kannapolis, Charlotte and Huntersville, authorities said.

The Sheriff's Office said the couple tried to get the prescriptions filled at different pharmacies in Salisbury, Rockwell, Granite Quarry, China Grove, Charlotte and Kannapolis. 

Officials said the Roys are on probation in Oklahoma. There are also Oklahoma arrest warrants out for Christie Roys charging her with a bogus check and obtaining controlled substances by fraud. 

The law enforcement agencies participating in the investigation include the Rowan County Sheriff's Office, U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration, Stanly County Sheriff's Office, Thomasville Police Department, Kannapolis Police Department, Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department and the Gaston County Sheriff's Office. 

The Sheriff's Office said the investigation is still ongoing and more charges may still be added.

Delbert Roys charges in Rowan County:

  • Two counts of conspiracy to traffic opium/heroin
  • Three counts of obtaining controlled substances by fraud.

Christie Roys charges in Rowan, Cabarrus and Mecklenburg counties:

  • Five counts of trafficking opium/heroin;
  • One count of attempt to traffick opium/heroin;
  • Eight counts of obtaining controlled substances by fraud
  • Three counts of attempt to obtaining controlled substances by fraud
  • Four counts of possess with intent to manufacture/sell/deliver controlled substances
  • Three counts of possess with intent to sell or deliver a controlled substances within 1000 feet of a school, Granite Quarry Elementary School.
