HUNTERSVILLE — Cody Franklin Porter had never been in trouble with the law before at the age of 66. But now he’s accused of killing his wife.
The Huntersville Police Department says the incident happened at the couple’s home on McGinnis Lane. Officers were called out nearly two weeks ago, but Porter’s wife died less than a week later.
“Almost always -- a first criminal offense or first offense that they got caught for, does not mean it was the first time they did anything,” said Bea Cot’e.
Cot’e is head of Impact, which is an intervention program for domestic violence abusers. She told Channel 9’s Glenn Counts that this case is similar to many others.
“That is probably the most common method without using a weapon, so it’s extremely common,” Cot’e said.
Huntersville police say that Porter strangled his wife Sandra on September 23. He was arrested that day on strangulation, assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill and domestic violence charges. He posted a $65,000 bond and was released on the 26th.
Five days later, his wife died. Porter was then arrested for second-degree murder.
Cot’e says that’s not uncommon, and she encourages all strangulation victims to get checked out for injuries that may not be visible.
“If you have been strangled or smothered or in any way had your airway affected, it’s really important that you get checked out at an emergency room,” Cot’e said.
Cot’e says that strangulation is a major problem in the state and she hopes that lawmakers will make it easier to prosecute.
Porter will have his first appearance on the murder charge on Monday. Given that he already has an attorney, there is a chance that the issue of bond will come up on this new charge.
