Deputies search for suspect after chase ends in crash near elementary school

HICKORY, N.C. — A manhunt is underway after deputies chased a driver in Hickory, who crashed then ran into the woods Tuesday morning.

Deputies said they got in a pursuit after receiving a call along Kool Park Road about someone potentially dealing drugs out of a car.

When they got there, the driver took off, passing other vehicles while trying to get away from the police.

Channel 9 could see deputies park near the entrance of Snow Creek Elementary. They also placed St. Stephens High School, Ardnt Middle School and Clyde Campbell Elementary under a “soft” lockdown while deputies searched the area for the suspect, but they have all been lifted.

Reporter Dave Faherty spoke to one woman who saw the man run from the car after it went airborne and crashed at the end of her driveway. She said he ran right through her family’s backyard.

“Dukes of Hazzard, the way the car went up into the air and came down, just like the Dukes of Hazzard,” the woman said. “We didn’t know what was going on so we were standing here talking. We don’t know nothing. We were scared and when we saw the police that’s when we all flew.”

Deputies searched for nearly two hours, but no arrests have been made. Authorities said they have extra patrols in the area and around the schools.

No other information has been released.
