Police: Man arrested in Texas for deadly southwest Charlotte shooting

CHARLOTTE — A man accused of a shooting in southwest Charlotte that left a 16-year-old dead and another man hurt has been arrested in Texas, police said.

Officers responded at around 9 p.m. on June 21 to an apartment complex on Branchview Drive near East Arrowood and Nations Ford roads.

At the scene, police found 16-year-old Jeferson Cantareno shot to death inside a vehicle. An 18-year-old who was in the vehicle was also found shot nearby. He was taken to a local hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

On Monday, police said Noe Raul Chinchilla was arrested in Austin, Texas, for the murder of Cantareno. He is awaiting extradition back to Mecklenburg County.

According to a police report, a person called 911 on June 21, saying there was a crash on Branchview Drive. The caller also said there was a shootout.

Channel 9′s Ken Lemon spoke to witnesses who said the teen drove into the community, followed by another car. Then, they said the driver of the other vehicle got out and shot him.

A woman who lives at the apartment complex told Lemon that she heard the shots and ran outside. She said even after being shot, the teen driver made it around the parking lot, hit a truck and backed up before coming to a stop.

“(He) was very, very young,” she said. “The last words he said: ‘I got shot.’”

Police have not released any additional information at this point.
