Innocent driver shot while driving on Highway 9 in Lancaster, police say

LANCASTER, S.C. — An 18-year-old man was apparently shot for no reason while driving on Highway 9 in Lancaster on Monday night, according to the Lancaster Police Department.

Police said they responded before midnight and found a Ford Crown Victoria in an embankment off Highway 9 Bypass West near North Main Street.

The driver was shot and taken by Lancaster County EMS to the hospital before being flown to a different hospital, according to police. Officials said there was no update on his condition.

Channel 9 obtained a 911 call from the incident.

“I got a car following me right now,” the caller told 911 dispatch.

The 18-year-old called around midnight.

“They (are) getting beside me now,” he said.

The sound of gunfire and the caller in pain could be heard in the 911 call.

The 911 dispatcher described what happen while still on the call.

“I heard it,” the dispatcher said. “He was passing McDonalds, headed toward Walmart. I don’t know what kind of vehicle, but I heard those shots.”

Lancaster police said they were continuing to investigate the shooting and crash.

They believe the driver was an innocent victim.

They said no other details were available, including the victim’s condition.
