CHARLOTTE — North Carolina is one of 20 states joining a federal lawsuit against Dollar General, accusing the company of overcharging shoppers.
The Federal Trade Commission sued the bargain chain for what it calls “long-running deceptive pricing practices.” It claims prices are higher at the register than displayed on shelves and ads, costing customers millions of dollars.
The FTC says Dollar General knew about the issues and failed to correct them.
Other states joining the FTC lawsuit include: Alabama, Arizona, Arkansas, California, Connecticut, Florida, Illinois, Iowa, Kansas, Louisiana, Michigan, Mississippi, Nebraska, New Jersey, Ohio, Oklahoma, Tennessee, Utah and Wisconsin, according to the FTC.
Dollar General operates more than 21,000 stores across the United States. According to the FTC, the company’s low- and fixed-income customers rely on the accuracy of its pricing.
