CHARLOTTE — The Duke’s Mayo Classic college football game barely surpassed half-capacity over the weekend at Bank of America Stadium, but organizers and nearby businesses said the West Virginia-Virginia matchup still made a tangible difference in sales and energy in Uptown.

West Virginia defeated Virginia 38-27 on Sept. 19 in front of an announced crowd of 39,377 at the 75,000-capacity stadium. Attendance consists of tickets sold and distributed, not turnstile counts.

Charlotte has hosted a sponsored early-season, neutral-site game at the NFL stadium since 2015. A local nonprofit, the Charlotte Sports Foundation, owns and operates the game.
