CHARLOTTE — Former Charlotte City Councilwoman Tiawana Brown and her two daughters will be sentenced on Tuesday after pleading guilty to COVID-19 relief fraud.
In her sentencing memorandum, Brown’s attorney says the court should impose a straight probationary sentence with no custodial component.
It says she has repaid the entire PPP loan of more than $20 thousand dollars and she will repay the remaining balance of more than $22 thousand dollars.
The sentencing memo says that as a result of the criminal charges, Brown lost her job at American Airlines, her community engagement work with Carolinas Care Partnership, and her City Council seat.
Her attorney says probation is sufficient to deter others and it will allow Brown to work with her new logistics company so the SBA can be paid back.
He also says probation will allow the 24 women living in Brown’s safe homes to keep their beds.
