LAKE WYLIE, S.C. — A family says they’re hurt and broken over the loss of their 21-year-old loved one after he drowned in York County earlier this week.
Channel 9’s Lauren Crawford sat down with the young man’s father as he reflected on his son’s life, cut short.
In just a few days, family and friends will gather here at Camp Greene Park to remember Langston Neal.
The 21-year-old drowned in Lake Wylie on Labor Day.
“I’ve never felt nothing. No one should ever have to bury their child,” said Langston Neal Sr.
For Langston Neal Sr., the loss is almost impossible to put into words. His son wasn’t just his namesake; he was his best friend.
“Our conversations would just go on for hours sometimes. We would just sit there and talk about anything,” Neal said.
The memories of Langston Neal Jr. now carry a weight his family never imagined.
“Even if I was in a bad mood, he would always make me smile,” said Alexandra Neal, Langston’s sister.
“He was a people’s person. Everyone loved him. Hardworking. He just started working for the city. He loved his job. He was proud of his job. I was proud of him,” his father said.
York County deputies say Neal jumped from a boat into Lake Wylie Monday evening and did not resurface.
Crews launched a search from the lake’s southern shore. About an hour later, divers found Neal’s body.
“I’m so hurt. I’m not angry. I’m not mad. It was a freak thing that happened, but I’m just hurt. I’m broken,” his father said.
His death is the fourth reported death on Lake Wylie this summer.
For Langston’s father, the focus is on the memories they shared and the message he hopes others take from this loss.
“You never know when it’s over, the last time you’re going to talk to somebody. Don’t live with grudges. Just try to be happy,” Neal said.
Langston’s family and friends will gather at 6:30 Saturday evening for a balloon release to celebrate his life.
His death remains under investigation.
