MONROE, N.C. — A Monroe pastor was parked in his church parking lot Thursday when he said a metal object, that weighed nearly 2 pounds, "fell from the sky."
Christopher Griffin said he was inside when it happened, but heard the bang.
"The first thing I thought was somebody threw it," he said.
When he came outside and assessed the damage, Griffin quickly changed his mind.
He said the angle the object came through his windshield, along with the impact to the glass, suggested something much more mysterious.
"We just really think it fell from the sky, which I know sounds crazy," his wife Ashea Griffin said.
Griffin shared photos of both the object and the damage with Facebook friends, receiving more than 100 comments identifying the mystery metal.
Channel Nine sent pictures of the object to an astronomer with the North Carolina Museum of Natural Sciences for help identifying it.
"By looking at that picture, I can be pretty confident that isn't something from space," Rachel Smith said.
Smith said she would have to inspect the metal in person to be sure, but suggested it may have fallen from another object.
The Federal Aviation Administration is also investigating.
"I just want to know what it is," Ashea Griffin said.
