CHARLOTTE — Federal investigators are warning families about “nihilistic violent extremism” online, according to WPDE, our sister station in Florence, South Carolina.
Officials say they are seeing more cases of online groups, known as NVEs, targeting vulnerable kids and teens.
Nihilistic violent extremists are online groups that promote violence, suicide and destruction.
According to the FBI, these criminals groom and desensitize victims with posts, videos and messages online. Then, things escalate as bad actors try to extort them or demand self-harm or violence.
Agents said the groups often target vulnerable kids and recommend parents add restrictions if they’re using the internet. They also say parents should watch for sudden changes in sleep or behavior, unexplained cuts or suicidal behavior.
