SHELBY, N.C. — The Shelby County Sheriff’s Office does not believe the fire that canceled Sunday service at Dover Baptist Church was intentional.
Neighbors told Channel 9’s Dave Faherty it was cold Sunday morning and they could see flames coming from the roof.
Eyewitnesses say firefighters from across the county worked for hours to bring the fire under control.
Neighbors say it broke out around 7 a.m. Sunday morning, and firefighters scrambled to get to the scene.
The church has been in the Shelby area for 100 years, starting as a Mill Village church.
Long-time pastor Bulo Price said he hopes the church will be rebuilt.
We’re hoping to learn more about the investigation from the fire marshal and will share that with you on Eyewitness News at 5.
