BURKE COUNTY, N.C. — A former soccer coach with Burke County Public Schools is facing charges involving a student.
According to police reports, Herlinton Rugama-Blandon is accused of sexual activity and indecent liberties with a student. The student attended Jimmy C. Draughn High School.
District records show Rugama-Blandon worked as a temporary part-time coach from 2023 to 2025.
Rugama-Blandon is being held without bond.
Statement from BCPS:
“We understand that situations like this can be concerning for students, families and staff.
“Because this matter involves an ongoing law enforcement investigation and a former part-time coach/employee, we cannot comment on specific details other than what is mentioned above.
“In general, we take all concerns involving student safety seriously and cooperate fully with law enforcement. All employees undergo background checks and training designed to help safeguard our students. We expect all employees associated with our school district to uphold the highest standards of professionalism and conduct.
“Our focus remains on protecting our students and providing a safe, supportive environment for every child.”
