Man in custody after hourslong standoff on busy south Charlotte road

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — The Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department said a man is in custody after an hourslong standoff Friday afternoon on a busy road in south Charlotte.

CMPD said officers responded to Providence Road and McKee Road around 11 a.m. for a possible armed subject.

Chopper 9 Skyzoom flew over the intersection around noon and could see several officers standing outside their patrol cars with their guns drawn.

According to police, firefighters responded to a medical call at the intersection and when they walked over to the car, the driver threatened them with what they believed was a gun. The police and SWAT team were then called to the scene and tried to negotiate with the driver, but officers said he refused to get out of his car.

“They were talking to him over the loud speaker. They were telling him to throw his weapon out of the car, at that time, and he wasn’t complying,” bystander Tyler Williams said.

After about three hours, police said the man surrendered and was taken into custody. It’s unclear what charges, if any, he will face. His name has not been released.

Police said he never said a word the entire time and he was treated by medical staff following the standoff.

Providence Road at McKee Road, Ballantyne Commons Parkway and Interstate 485 at Providence Road was shut down as police worked to deescalate the situation.

No injuries were reported.
