High-speed chase through Gastonia leaves innocent victim hurt

GASTONIA, N.C. — One man is in custody after a high-speed chase through Gastonia on Tuesday that left an innocent woman hurt.

It happened at about noon Tuesday and ended when officers were able to arrest the suspect near South New Hope Road and Armstrong Park Drive.

Channel 9’s Ken Lemon got video of the aftermath of the chase, courtesy of the Gaston County Scanner Radio Facebook page. The North Carolina State Highway Patrol, Gaston County Police Department, and the Federal Bureau of Investigation were spotted taking the suspect into custody.

A warrant identified the suspect as 41-year-old Jamario Rickenbacker. A highway patrol trooper tried to pull him over near Robinwood Drive, and Rickenbacker sped away. The warrant says he exceeded 15 mph over the speed limit. It’s not clear why the trooper initially started the traffic stop.

During the pursuit, Rickenbacker was involved in a crash with the innocent woman’s car near Armstrong Drive. Channel 9 learned that the woman was crossing the intersection on South New Hope Road when Rickenbacker’s car hit her.

The victim is badly bruised from the crash and recovering at home. She told Channel 9 she’s glad the unintentionally helped bring the pursuit to an end.

Rickenbacker faces charges of fleeing/eluding arrest, felony hit and run causing injury, resisting a public officer, failure to heed light or siren, reckless driving to endanger, failure to stop at red light, and driving left of center.

Rickenbacker was released from jail Tuesday after posting a $10,000 bond. He’s due back in court at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday for his first appearance.

Channel 9 is working on getting more details on the chase. Watch Eyewitness News at 5 p.m. for the latest update.
