Highway Patrol: Impaired driver crashes into 2 troopers on I-85

CHARLOTTE — Two Highway Patrol troopers were taken to the hospital following a collision Thursday night in north Charlotte.

According to the Highway Patrol, two troopers pulled over a speeding BMW just before 10 p.m. on Interstate 85 near Mallard Creek Church Road.

While both troopers were in their patrol car writing up a citation, authorities said a red Kia, driven by Jackson Grace, ran off the right shoulder of the interstate and collided with the cruiser and the BMW.

The troopers were able to get out of their car, as was the driver of the BMW. The troopers suffered only minor injuries and were taken to the hospital to be evaluated and later released, officials said.

The driver of the BMW was not hurt, according to the Highway Patrol.

The driver of the Kia, Grace, was also not hurt but was arrested and charged with driving while impaired, fail to move over and reckless driving.

The crash remains under investigation.
