Detectives investigate homicide along trail at northeast Charlotte park

CHARLOTTE — The Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department is investigating a homicide Tuesday morning at a northeast Charlotte park near the Villa Heights neighborhood.

The investigation was on a trail in Cordelia Park along East 24th Street where someone was found shot. They died at the scene.

According to a police report obtained by Channel 9 on Wednesday, the victim was identified as 32-year-old Jamal Jones.

“This is insane,” said Grace Nadermann, who was at the park Tuesday morning. “I usually feel safe here.”

Nearby resident Andrew McAnulty brings his son Nolan to the park every morning.

McAnulty said he will be more cautious before visiting next time.

“I want to know some of the details,” he said. “Was it targeted -- not targeted?”

The circumstances surrounding the deadly shooting have not been released.
