FAIRFIELD COUNTY, S.C. — The Chester councilman murder case will be retried because of a deadlocked jury, the judge ruled Saturday afternoon.
The jury deliberated for hours Friday afternoon and Saturday morning in the trial of Chris Moore, 19, who is accused of killing Councilman Odell Williams in 2014.
Reporter DaShawn Brown said the judge told the jury to continue deliberating after he received a note that said they had failed to reach the same verdict. He ultimately called for a retrial.
On Thursday, Moore testified in his own defense, saying he never intended to kill Williams.
Investigators said Moore was trying to rob a rival gang outside of Williams' business when the councilman confronted Moore and fired a shot, but Moore said he only returned fire in self-defense.
