Deputies: Juvenile charged with shooting 56-year-old woman in York County

YORK COUNTY, S.C. — A juvenile has been charged with shooting a 56-year-old woman in York County Tuesday, the sheriff’s office said.

Deputies responded at around 1:30 p.m. Tuesday to a home on Sutton Springs Road where they found a person who had been shot inside. The victim was later identified as Alethea Puckett Totherow.

After several hours, the sheriff’s office announced that investigators were still at the scene “working diligently on this incident.”

“Just a very overwhelming amount of law enforcement from sheriff’s department cars there. I saw state trooper cars,” neighbor Justice Steinberg said.

Deputies said they eventually took a took a juvenile into custody and charged him with murder and possession of a weapon during a violent crime.

“What was he doing having access to a gun,” another neighbor told Channel 9′s Tina Terry.

Detectives said the incident was isolated. Deputies are still working to learn what led up to the shooting or how the juvenile knew the victim.

“Everybody keeps quiet stays to themselves,” a neighbor said. “It’s a nice area. You hate to see something like this happen.”
