Family inside house when driver crashes into York Co. home following chase with deputies

YORK COUNTY, S.C. — Authorities are investigating after a driver crashed into the garage at a York County home Monday afternoon.

Channel 9′s Tina Terry learned Tuesday that a family was outside the home moments before the crash happened.

The York County Sheriff’s Office said a chase started after they tried to pull a driver over at the intersection of West Springdale Road and Firetower Road, because a license plate reader showed the car was stolen. After they stopped the pursuit, the car ended up smashing into a home at the corner of Neely Store and Walker roads in Rock Hill.

Chopper 9 Skyzoom flew over the scene, where a gold-colored car could be seen crashed into the house.

A man who lives in the house said his wife and two children, could have been killed in the crash and that they’re thankful his family survived. He said they had just closed their garage door and walked inside their house, but said their four-year-old daughter was still inside the garage at the time.

“We were scared to death because she has children and her son is normally playing outside around that time of the day,” said neighbor Kay Baker.

Baker was across the street and saw the crash happen.

“My son and my husband took off running out there and by the time they got there, the person driving and the one in the front seat had taken off running. The car was still running and a young lady was laying in the driveway complaining of her chest hurting,” she said.

The driver and another man ran away from the scene but have since been taken into custody, according to officials. They are facing several charges including reckless driving, failure to stop for blue lights and possession of a stolen vehicle.

A woman in the car’s back seat was taken to a hospital for her injuries.

“I’m extremely grateful. I know it could have been a lot more tragic, and I’m glad that the people in the car, nobody was killed, because it easily could have happened,” Baker said.
