CHARLOTTE — A suspect is in custody after a police pursuit crossed county lines Wednesday afternoon, according to the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department.
Shortly after 3:30 p.m., officers were patrolling in the 3000 block of North Graham Street near Atando Avenue when they witnessed a violent crime in progress, CMPD said. Officers attempted to intervene when one of the vehicles involved fled the scene at a high rate of speed.
Because the incident involved a crime considered dangerous to life, officers initiated a vehicle pursuit.
Channel 9 tracked the pursuit along Interstate 85 South going into Gaston County and into South Carolina.
Authorities in Spartanburg County confirmed the suspect was in custody.
Preliminary information indicates no officers were injured and no CMPD officers fired their weapons.
Witnesses near Atando Avenue and Graham Street said they heard gunfire around 3:30 p.m.
“I heard the gunshots, and that’s kind of scary,” witness Brenda Williams said. “Thought they were going to start shooting. They had their guns drawn, but they didn’t shoot. I think I’m going to look into other employment.”
North Graham Street remained closed Wednesday afternoon as CMPD continued investigating the crime.
