'Mobile Food Pharmacies’ will give struggling families healthier options

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Many people in Mecklenburg County don’t have access to healthy and nutritious food, which is why Loaves and Fishes helps make that possible. The nonprofit said more than 10,800 have shopped at their brick-and-mortar food pantries so far this year.

In January, Loaves and Fishes opened its first mobile food pharmacy off Rozzelles Ferry Road in west Charlotte. So far, nearly 100 people been referred to shop there for groceries.

Tiffany Hancock shopped at the mobile food pantry Friday for the first time after she was referred to the service. She shopped for a week's worth of groceries for her family of four. She has three kids, ages 6, 4, and a 2 month old.

Hancock left with two carts full of food, and she said it's a load she couldn't afford on a weekly trip to a grocery store.

“Not two baskets. No, it’s kind of hard right now, but I’m thankful for them. Two baskets is a lot. It helps out,” Hancock said.
