Loved ones hold vigil for murdered teen

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — The family and friends of Kevin Washington gathered for a vigil Saturday night, exactly one week after the 18-year-old was killed outside a party in East Charlotte.

"This family is hurting. They need closure and can't get that until the person responsible is caught," said an organizer from Mother of Murdered Offspring.

Washington's family was visibly distraught. His mother fought tears as she read a letter she wrote to her son. Other family members broke down as they delivered short speeches.

"He was an adorable child," said Washington's grandmother.

One of Washington's cousins also spoke about how much he admired him.

"He always tells me to do my best, always pushed me," said Washington's cousin, as his voice began to crack. "He's in a better place now."

Washington had just graduated high school and planned on attending UNC Charlotte. He wanted to study nursing.

He was killed after being shot near a party on Timbertop Lane. Two others were badly injured. Charlotte-Mecklenburg police have still not arrested the shooter or shooters.
