CHARLOTTE — A man has been sentenced to two consecutive life sentences without parole after being found guilty of killing a Charlotte couple in a 2020 shooting.
Xaveon Dunn, 28, was found guilty Wednesday of two counts of first-degree murder and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon in the deaths of 26-year-old Dondrake Blackmoore and 27-year-old Jakailah Jackson.
The shooting happened Oct. 19, 2020, on Kilborne Drive.
According to prosecutors, Dunn was driving a blue SUV when he chased someone near a convenience store. He later pulled in front of Blackmoore’s vehicle, and prosecutors said Dunn fired eight shots through the driver’s side window.
Six shots struck Blackmoore, who died at the scene. Jackson, who was sitting in the passenger seat, was also shot. She ran into a nearby store and was taken to a hospital, where she later died.
The couple’s 3-year-old son was in the back seat and was not injured.
Investigators recovered eight 9mm shell casings at the scene and determined they were fired from the same gun.
Charlotte-Mecklenburg police later identified Dunn as the driver and found him at a residence on Loretta Place, where he was arrested. Detectives also recovered clothing consistent with what Dunn was wearing in surveillance video and live 9mm ammunition, prosecutors said.
Dunn had prior felony convictions and was prohibited from possessing a firearm.
His trial began Aug. 31 and concluded with Wednesday’s verdict. Judge Donald R. Cureton Jr. sentenced Dunn to two consecutive life sentences without the possibility of parole.
