Hickory woman dies after being shot Monday, police say

HICKORY, N.C. — A woman who was shot in the stomach Monday morning in Hickory has died, Hickory police said Tuesday.

Police responded to the shooting around 10 a.m. on 11th Street Northwest.

While in route to the shooting, Hickory police said the description of the suspect was relayed to officers and he was found and detained by officers.

Police said James William Thacker shot Tammy Cloninger behind a home. Cloninger was transported to Frye Regional Medical Center where she later died.

Police have charged Thacker with Cloninger's murder.

Police said Thacker and Cloninger were involved in a domestic dispute at the time of the shooting.

The Hickory Police Department’s Criminal Investigation Division is continuing the investigation at this time.
