WEDDINGTON, N.C. — A driver with 18 pending charges was arrested over the weekend after fleeing a law enforcement checkpoint in Weddington and leading deputies on a pursuit, according to the Union County Sheriff’s Office.
Xavier Jaquan Woods is being held without bond at the Union County Detention Center on eight new criminal charges.
It started during a checkpoint conducted by the Union County Sheriff’s Office in the Weddington area. According to deputies, Woods refused to produce a valid driver’s license, made an illegal U-turn and nearly struck a deputy before driving away from the scene.
Deputies immediately pursued the vehicle until Woods crashed on Beulah Church Road. Following the crash, he ran on foot into a nearby wooded area.
Deputies called for a K-9, and then they were told that Woods got a ride to a local convenience store. Deputies found him on Butterburr Drive in a nearby neighborhood.
When deputies approached him, Woods ran away again before deputies arrested him.
Authorities charged Woods with eight new offenses: fleeing to elude, possession with intent to sell or deliver marijuana, possession of a firearm by a felon, possession of a Schedule II controlled substance, driving while license revoked, carrying a concealed weapon, assault on a government official and resisting, delaying or obstructing an officer.
A magistrate ordered Woods held without bond due to his 18 pending charges alongside the eight new charges. He remains held at the Union County Detention Center.
