Convicted murderer charged in Anson Co. double homicide

A family is devastated after their loved ones were found stabbed and shot to death at an Anson County home.

"He took a good person and my friend is gone and she can't be replaced," a friend of the victim said.

Police said James Smith is in jail charged in the couple's deaths.

The scene has been active all day long.

Channel 9 has seen family members come and go.

Family members are in a state of disbelief and they said this a truly a nightmare come true.

"My mom, she was a loving person, kind-hearted, never met a stranger," said daughter Sharda Melton.

Daisy Melton's two daughters and their children are shellshocked by their mother's murder.

On Sunday night, Anson sheriff's deputies found Melton stabbed to death outside her home on Gin Lane in Morven.

Inside they discovered the body of her boyfriend, Larry Lindsey, 58. He had been shot.

Smith, 47, is charged with two counts of first-degree murder.

Authorities said he was Melton's ex-boyfriend.

"I have a 4-year-old son and he's taking it worse than I am and what am I supposed to say? What am I supposed to tell him when he asks me?" Sharda Melton said.

Smith has a concerning past. In 1992, he was sentenced to 15 years in prison for murdering his wife.

He was released in 1997.  Family members said he and Melton began dating about a year later.

From there, authorities said there was a history of violence and just last month deputies removed Smith from Melton's home.

"I told her to just be careful, but I never thought something like this would happen," said cousin Velma Pratt.

Everyone knows everyone in Morven and tears were shed even for the suspect.

"I'm going to pray for him. I'm going to pray for that boy, it's just sad," said family friend Ella Hunt.

Police found a gun and a knife they believe were used in the killings.

James is being held without bond.
