Police have charged Lakeith Marshaun Lawrence, 20, after they said he shot and killed Philip McLean, 45, who was found behind an apartment in the 600 block of 17th Street Drive NW.
The police chief in Hickory performed CPR on McLean after arriving at the apartments but he died at the scene.
Police said that Lawrence and McLean knew each other.
Officers conducted a massive manhunt for Lawrence after finding McLean just after 1 p.m.
A heavy police presence could be seen from Chopper 9 Skyzoom while it flew over Highway 321.
Reporter Dave Faherty was there minutes after officers arrived early in the afternoon.
Police Chief Tom Adkins said he responded to a call of shots in the area. When neighbors alerted him to the man on the ground, he tried to help.
Seventeenth Street Drive Northwest was shut down near the apartments where residents heard a single gunshot.
"I heard some shots or whatever, and I walked over here to be nosy like most are, and I (saw) a body over there and I was like, ‘Yo, he's over here. He's over here,’" witness Allan Little said.
Residents told Channel 9 they wanted to know who was responsible and why it happened.
"I have a 2-year-old little girl who I don't have with me right now, but it is kind of scary to see this happen this close to the apartments," Amanda Ellerbe said.
Authorities don't have information about a motive.
Channel 9 has found out that Lawrence was convicted in 2013 for felony attempted common law robbery in Catawba County and had his probation revoked and served time as recently as April of this year.
Lawrence is set to face a judge Friday.
