CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Charlotte Mayor Anthony Foxx used strong words in his annual State of the City address.
He said the city needs streetcar. He called transit a "game changer for Charlotte," even if paying for it a certain way rubs Gov. Pat McCrory the wrong way.
"Let me make it very clear. We have one mayor at a time," Foxx said.
McCrory has said if Charlotte uses property taxes for streetcar, the state may rethink money for the next LYNX leg.
City Council member Warren Cooksey doesn't blame McCrory.
"I think our funding partners have every right to question how we fund our transit plan because they are partners in it," he said.
Either way, Foxx said the city has to sort out streetcar and the rest of the city's long-term construction list and its capital program, before deciding whether to spend tax dollars renovating Bank of America Stadium, something sources tell Eyewitness News the Panthers have been discussing with city leaders in closed session, or even pursuing a Super Bowl.
"If we don't get a capital budget passed, nobody's going to want to come to a Super Bowl in Charlotte,” Foxx said.
