Meck County moves from low level of COVID-19 community spread to medium

CHARLOTTE — Nearly three years after the first reported COVID-19 case in Mecklenburg County, the county has moved from a low level of community spread to medium.

The CDC determines the spread of COVID based on the number of new cases and hospitalizations.

“I encourage everyone in our community to be proactive and exercise greater caution,” said Dr. Raynard Washington, Mecklenburg County Public Health director. “The change to the medium level means that people living with underlying health conditions such as asthma, COPD, high blood pressure, and heart disease or with a weakened immune system should be on higher alert and take additional preventive measures.”

Health officials recommend everyone stay up-to-date on their vaccine and booster shots, stay home if you’re feeling sick, follow isolation recommendations if you contract COVID or are exposed to the virus, and consider masking in crowded indoor settings.

Mecklenburg County reported its first COVID case on March 12, 2020.
